Inspired by Japanese history.

I came to Sendai as a special research student in September 2017 to join Professor Ryuta Kawashima and his laboratory at IDAC.

I was interested in Japan ever since I was a child, and this fascination has not only lasted to this very day, but continues to grow. When I was young, Japanese history characters like samurais and ninjas inspired me. Today, I am especially intrigued by the system of values, above all: honor and respect, which has been developed throughout history and still forms the basis of Japanese society. I am so glad for the opportunity to come to see Japan for myself, and so far, I have not been disappointed at all even if there are so many cultural differences compared to my home country (Germany).

Despite the fact that I have only been here for one month, I have met so many kind people and I was able to attend so many events such as welcome parties, sightseeing tours, and so forth. Although I do not have that much experience when it comes to doing research, IDAC members have treated me like one of their own ever since I arrived. Up until now, I have always been placed into existing projects regardless of whether or not I wanted to join, but here at IDAC, I still cannot believe that I can be independent and pursue my own project. I am so grateful that I can reach out anytime to any one when I need help, and I find it very rewarding and extremely privileged to work in Kawashima Lab.

I am so thankful and humbled to experience such a wonderful opportunity, and I am looking forward to spending more time here in Sendai.
