　当分野では、脳科学基礎研究として、ラットやマウスを使用した小動物イメージング研究、人間の心の働きを画像化する脳機能イメージング研究、そしてそれらの研究成果を、教育や福祉領域に応用することを目指した社会技術研究まで、広範囲の研究を、医学、理学、生命科学、工学、薬学、言語学、教育学、芸術学など、多彩な研究者が精力的に展開しています。

小動物イメージング研究では、ヒトの実験では不可能な脳組織染色・遺伝子操作・薬理学的介入を駆使して、ＭＲＩなどで得られるヒトのイメージング研究成果の背後に潜む生物学的なバックグラウンドを検証します。

脳機能イメージング研究では、我々の興味は、ヒトの「心」にあります。知覚・記憶・運動・言語・情動などの認知機能の神経基盤を解明し、身の周りの複雑な物理的・社会的環境を生き抜く、我々の「心」の仕組みに迫ります。

社会技術研究では、教育や福祉に脳科学の立場からメスを入れていきます。高齢者の脳機能を改善、維持・向上させるためのシステムや、子どもの脳機能の健全な発達を支援する教育システムの開発を行っています。
