当分野では脳加齢に伴う脳疾患の予防臨床医学の確立と癌の征圧を研究の目標として掲げている。基本的アプローチは最新の画像診断装置を取り入れた診療と研究を展開することである。具体的には(1)PETやSPECTによる脳生理機能の加齢変化の解析、(2)日本人脳MRI画像データベースの構築とその解析、(3)脳加齢の危険因子の同定、(4)痴呆など脳加齢疾患の病態解明などの診療・研究が展開されている。また、これらのデータに基づいて脳の加齢を予防するための予防臨床医学の確立を外来診療の柱としている。

また、PETによる癌診断の研究では、癌の亢進した代謝に着目して癌の代謝診断法の開発に世界で初めて画期的な成果をおさめた。現在も基礎から臨床まで一貫した研究・診療が行われている。この成果はPETによる癌診断法が保険診療に採用される原動力となった。本年大学病院に導入されるPETによる診療は当科(加齢核医学科)が担当する。

以上述べたように、当分野では急速に進行する高齢化社会に対応して、社会の要請に合致した脳の加齢と癌制圧の研究が行われている。

18Fフルオロデオキシグルコース(糖代謝の指標)を注射して45分後の全身の画像で、冠状断の画像を後ろから前へ順にならべた。矢印は左肺の原発巣、肺門リンパ節転移、副腎転移、左鎖骨上窩リンパ節転移を示している。矢頭は腰椎・仙骨・座骨・右大勝骨への転移を示している。脳及び膀胱には生理的な薬剤の集積・排泄がある。一度に全身の病巣の診断ができるのが特徴である。
