最先端のメディカルエンジニアリング研究により、新しい診断法治療法の開発、臨床医学研究を行うことにより加齢医学の進展に資するのが当分野の目標 です。21世紀COEバイオナノテクノロジー基盤未来医工学、及び、グローバルCOEプログラム「新世紀世界の成長拠点に築くナノ医工学拠点」にも事業担 当者として参画して全学的な規模でME研究を推進し、平成20年、日本で最初に設立された大学院医工学研究科にも「人工臓器医工学 講座」と呼称する協力講座として参画し、学内外の様々な研究施設・医療機器メーカとタイアップして数多くの産官学共同プロジェクトが当分野の実験室で推進 される運びになっています。

これまでの東北大学型空気圧駆動式補助人工心臓を開発から臨床試験、産業化へ進めて行った開発研究のノウハウの蓄積から、本学大学院医工学研究科の研究成 果の多くのシーズに関しても、耐久性試験や臨床前試験から臨床への展開を目指して共同研究を計って行きたいと考えています。

大学病院においては心臓血管外科人工心臓外来チームの一環として診療している他、当教室の先輩方、非常勤講師の先生方の多くが、東北厚生年金病院、宮城県立循環器呼吸器センター、宮城社会保険病院、仙台市立病院、公立黒川病院、県北医療センター高萩協同病院など、市中病院で循環器疾患の診療に最前線で携わっておられるので、数多くの臨床研究を展開できる態勢を 整えつつ有ります。

諸先輩方のご協力により当教室の大学院医学研究科、医工学研究科の学生の教育や研究にも関連病院をあげてご協力いただいて いる他、医学部の学生さんのSGTや高次修練などの教育についても、最前線の病院で活躍されている先輩方の病院に臨床教育などをお願いしています。今後と も、医学研究、医工学研究の進展の基礎は現場であるとの視点から、臨床研究もますます拡充して行く予定です。
 これらの臨床研究では国際的な展開も計っており、例えば、欧米で唯一、寿命が年々短縮し、人口まで減少をはじめたロシア人の加齢現象に着目し、動脈硬化予 防の日露共同国際研究を開始しており、加齢研とスモレンスクステートメディカルアカデミーとは、国際学術協定を締結いたしました。また、北京で唯一の心臓 移植施設である安貞病院とは、移植に伴う免疫抑制剤による動脈硬化進展に着目して共同研究に着手し、吉林大学公衆衛生院とは、食生活、生活習慣と動脈硬化 に関する国際共同研究を進めています。欧州の中心部にあるチェコ共和国のマサリク大学医学部とは新たに国際学術協定を締結し、各人種の動脈硬化の加齢によ る進展とリスクファクターの分析調査をフィールドで進めています。

テレビアニメを視聴していた子供たちが発作を起こして問題になった「ポケモンショック事件」では、画像刺激に対する生体の病的影響が問題になりましたが、当研究室では三次元が贈刺激に対する生体反応解析のプログラムを開始し、自律神経反応のカオス解析を行っています。

これらの成果を応用して、最近では、ソニー、ウイルコム、フクダ電子、オムロン、本多電子、ネットワンなどとの企業連合で コンソーシアムを立ち上げ、成果として電子診療鞄や医療情報通信システムの開発に成功し、訪問診療などに応用できる研究成果を産学協同であげている他、 様々なメーカーともプロジェクトを進めています。
