At the beginning, the department of thoracic surgery was established for the development of surgical treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis. But now, the main foci of research have been changed to chest diseases, including lung cancers, pulmonary infectious diseases, chronic progressive lung diseases and mediastinal tumors. We are studying pathology, physiology, oncology, immunology and molecular biology of respiratory systems. Our main projects are; lung transplantation including transplant immunology and preservation of the lung, lung neoplasm, pathophysiology of respiratory distress and development of effective surgical treatment for lung cancer. They are summarized as follows:

1. Lung transplantation; lung preservation, rejection, and denervation physiology
2. Early detection of lung caners and assessment of lung cancer mass screening
3. Molecular biological approach for carcinogenesis of lung cancers
4. Investigation of the mechanism and treatment of ARDS and hypoxia-induced lung injury, including interaction, adhesion and signaling between neutrophil and endothelial cell
5. Cellular and molecular functional assessment of alveolar lining cells
6. Surgical treatment for chest diseases, including lung cancer and mediastinal tumor
7. Minimum invasive thoracic surgery (i.e., thoracoscopic surgery)
